Writing Marcellus Hale
The process of writing this play has to be like
hydraulic fracturing. I’m drilling down in myself, the issue, the people's pain as a result of the actions taken on the issue. I am making explosions which I hope will release a natural resource of words. The difference is that I want to release
spirit not gas, and I don’t need to turn
that spirit into commercial purposes. I'm looking for the spirit of goodness in people, not gas. Goodness in people, goodness in land, goodness in self, goodness in life. Human beings "run" on the spirit of wanting to do good, that's the animus that
activates the body.
